Sakaba Ikura Mokuzai (酒場 井倉木材)

By day a working timber shop, by night one of Kyoto’s most talked-about standing bars, Sakaba Ikura Mokuzai trades on a genuinely unusual concept near the old Prefectural Office in Kamigyo Ward. Regulars queue before opening for seared yellowtail tataki, seasonal crab, and a house mirin-lemon cocktail, served amid stacked lumber and handmade wooden coasters.

Its late-afternoon-to-evening hours and Sunday/holiday closures keep it on a local rhythm, even as word-of-mouth has made it a minor sensation.
