Autumn food in Japan

Did you know that Autumn is one of the best times of the year in terms of eating in Japan? Well, it is, so we thought we’d show you a couple of the specialities that the Japanese gorge on at this time of year.

Mushrooms especially matsutake which can often go for a few thousand yen in supermarkets at this time of year.

Chestnuts (Kuri) are also a seasonal favourite and are included in both main dishes and desserts. Kuri Kinton is a delicious sweet made from chestnuts and sweet potato just over the border in neighbouring Gifu Prefecture.

Pacific saury or Sanma in Japanese is a long, silver fish that is popular right now. The fish is found in abundance at this time of year and is often grilled and eaten at lunch or dinner.
